Robin Radar gets UAV detection
DSM Dyneema’s Dyneema Crystal technology has been selected by Robin Radar Systems for the radome of its new Elvira UAV detection system, the former announced on 7 June.
The technology helps Elvira detect and classify UAVs, distinguishing them from birds or other flying objects. According to the company the radar technology identifies UAVs at longer distances than traditional radar systems: smaller multi-rotor UAVs at up to 3km and larger fixed-wing UAVs at a range of 9km.
Dyneema Crystal technology features material with electromagnetic transparency and can protect sensitive equipment in harsh outdoor environments. DSM Dyneema’s partner and composite solutions provider Airborne, has produced the Elvira radomes.
Elvira has been designed specifically for UAV detection, providing military-grade radar capabilities including Doppler processing. It can be used across various scenarios, including the protection of prisons, harbours, high-profile events, airports, and other critical infrastructure.
Gerben Pakkert, head, R&D, Robin Radar Systems, said: ‘Because Elvira is looking for very small targets and must distinguish fine details to prevent false positives, we needed a radome material that could provide high transparency to minimise signal loss.
'These rigorous requirements quickly ruled out existing alternatives. Dyneema Crystal Technology delivers lower signal loss than any other radome material available today, allowing us to realise the full potential of our advanced radar system.’
Danielle Petra, new business development manager, DSM Dyneema, said: ‘With nearly 200,000 new drones taking to the air each month, as reported by CNBC, accurately detecting and classifying them is becoming extremely critical.
'Elvira is an excellent example of how Dyneema Crystal Technology is helping customers create radically new detection technologies and underscores DSM Dyneema’s commitment to supporting our customers with the most advanced security materials on the market today.’
