PLAAF sets up anti-UAV unit

Amidst international concern about the unregulated use of hobbyist UAVs and larger unmanned vehicles, China has taken the step of establishing a specialist unit within the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) tasked with countering UAVs.

A PLAAF news release reported that the unit concentrates on slow-moving UAVs flying at altitudes less than 1,000m. 

This data indicates the problem is not with foreign UAVs intruding into Chinese airspace, but rather that the PLAAF is targeting UAVs flying in unauthorised areas. With a growing terrorism problem, and accusations of ‘foreign spying’, the PLA is extremely sensitive about military installations as well
