US Army prepares for new weapon milestone

The US Army has released a draft prototype opportunity notice (PON) for its Next Generation Squad Automatic Rifle (NGSAR). 

The 1 March release is seen as the next milestone in the potential replacement of the currently-fielded M249 Squad Automatic Weapon in Brigade Combat Teams (BCTs) and other units.

Some observers point to combat after-action reports, such as those following the July 2008 Battle of Wanat, as spotlighting the Army’s need to procure and field Next Generation Squad Weapons. The NGSAR is viewed as the first variant of that next generation weapon family.
