Army steps forward on 40mm airburst

The US Army is moving forward on development of a new 40mm low velocity airburst munition. Designated XM1166, the High Explosive Airburst (HEAB) system would be used to defeat lightly armoured personnel targets – in the open and in defilade - when fired from the M320 grenade launcher

No modifications nor alterations to the M320 grenade launcher are anticipated and the new capability would be available to both special operations and conventional force elements.

Army briefings note that the 40mm XM1166 HEAB programme would provide the grenadier with ‘increased precision, lethality and range to engage personnel and material targets
