The Great Lakes Pilotage Division of the US Coast Guard (USCG) and the Canadian Great Lakes Pilotage Authority have awarded separate contracts to Saab to upgrade their Great Lakes Pilot Management System to the latest KleinPilot system, the company announced on 19 May.

The new KleinPilot will replace the current system that Saab installed in 2006. Both organisations and the three US Great Lakes pilotage associations will use the new system for managing and coordinating the dispatch of marine pilots in the region. The system will also be used to automatically generate billing based on applicable tariffs.

Saab will also host and administer the shared system on a secure site, on behalf of the Canadian pilotage authority and the USCG.

The KleinPilot system is based on the company's N-Tier management information system platform, with new functionality and features such as a web-based user interface, agent web portal and pilot web portal with an optional iPhone application.

The new system is set to go live by March 2017, when the Great Lakes navigation season begins.
