Fincantieri has redelivered an upgraded P61 offshore patrol vessel (OPV) to the armed forces of Malta, the company announced on 27 November.

The upgrade activities were carried out at the company’s drydocking facility within the Port of Genoa over six months.

Work focused on improving the reaction capability of the OPV. This included the installation of a new main propulsion plant, other machinery and equipment as well as the overhaul of most of the ships on-board systems.

The 53 metre long OPV was built by Fincantieri’s Muggiano shipyard and delivered to Malta in 2005.

The upgrade project was co-financed by the European Union Internal Security Fund.
