BAE Systems Australia has undocked the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN's) Anzac-class frigate, HMAS Arunta, at its Henderson facility following the completion of its Anzac Mid Life Capability Assurance Program (AMCAP) upgrade, the company announced on 30 November.

HMAS Arunta is the first Anzac class frigate to receive a full AMCAP upgrade. The vessel arrived in September 2017 for the work, which includes the replacement of ageing air search radar equipment with the new CEAFar L-band long-range air search radar. Other works include upgrade of ventilation systems; new sewage systems; improvements to the diesel engines to improve power and efficiency; replacement of the full communications suite on the ship; and improvements to the control and monitoring system.

HMAS Arunta will now undergo extensive testing of these new systems prior to undertaking sea trials, ahead of a planned return to service in 2019.

The entire fleet of eight Anzac class ships will be upgraded to ensure they remain capable of achieving the operational objectives of the RAN until the new Hunter class frigates enter service.
