AUSA 10: Shadow damage tolerance trials

In cooperation with the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency [DARPA], the US Army has begun looking at ways to reduce UAS fleet attrition through the use of advanced flight control systems.

For several years Rockwell Collins, which supplies many of the flight control systems on UAVs, has been looking at developing this type of advanced flight control. The company’s experimentation has included several flight trials with a scale model F/A-18 aircraft which the company has blown pieces of wing or flight control surface off in order to test the capability.
