Romania stands up SOF command

The Romanian Ministry of Defence (MoD) will establish a Special Operations Command (SOCOM) by 1 January 2018 as it seeks to expand joint operations across air, land and maritime forces.

The armed forces has already initiated the process which will see a SOF headquarters component capable of directing force elements from army and navy special operations units, according to Maj Gen Marian Sima, director general of the Defence Intelligence General Directorate of Romania.

The Romanian Army established a SOCOM, which comprises the 6th Special Operations Brigade 'Mihai Viteazu’ and Special Detachment of Protection and Intervention, in 2005.
