Irish Navy trials ROV from OPV Samuel Beckett
The introduction of a new class of offshore patrol vessel has enabled the Irish Naval Service to trial a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) from one of its ships for the first time.
The operation, carried out in late September, saw two 20ft containers housing the ROV and the command and control station loaded onto the first-of-class OPV Samuel Beckett for the trial in coastal waters off Cork. Trials were carried out up to 100 metres from the ship, with the navy expecting further trials to extend this range to 300 metres.
