Electric Boat aids USN future submarine research
General Dynamics Electric Boat has been awarded a contract from the USN for engineering and technical design services, to support the formulation of R&D concepts for current and future submarine platforms.
Work is scheduled for completion by September 2021.
Naval Sea Systems Command issued a $41.55 million contract, although if options are exercised the overall value will increase to $305.52 million with a completion date of September 2025.
It has not been disclosed whether the scope of the research contract includes the follow-on ‘Improved Virginia-class’ or SSN(X) design that the USN envisages entering service in the 2030s.
SSN(X) could involve construction of 20-30 boats, according to Shephard Defence Insight.
