LA Helicopters Snorkel Training
Los Angeles Helicopters (LAH) of Long Beach, California is excited to announce the addition of Snorkel Training to its existing Vertical Reference/Long Line Course.
LAH’s VR/LL course will now include teaching pilots the techniques of flying a snorkel. These techniques include learning the intricacies of flying in and out of a simulated dip tank. The course is not limited to just snorkel training but also incorporates the art of landing Alaskan style log heliports and flying a 200’ steel long line.
The most recent LAH course was attended by three Erickson Air Crane pilots. Erickson and LAH worked closely together to adapt an actual Crane Snorkel to fit and be workable with their R44 training ship. “The Engineers at Erickson Air Crane did an excellent job of removing enough weight and adapting the snorkel so that it would fit under the R44, we believe this is the first time anything like this has been done in the training arena,” says Michael Rogers, CEO of LAH.
“We felt this was an obvious addition to our existing Vertical Reference and Long Line training program, on average a training pilot would fly approaches, dip the snorkel and depart from our simulated dip tank up to 15-20 times a day over the period of the 11 day course, we believe that tanked operators will realize the value in training like this as well as the cost savings of snorkel training done in the R44 over a more expensive fleet aircraft.” To provide that much training in 11 days would be an expensive venture in a company aircraft.
In addition to the snorkel, LAH has added a range of products from the Barry Company (www.barry.ca) too include 200’ synthetic lines, nets, and barrel slings which has allowed us to diversify the program even further and provide the attendees a more realistic training environment. LAH is extremely impressed with the quality and functionality of the Barry gear.
