Upgraded Mi-28N starts first flight trials
A prototype of a modernised Mi-28 combat helicopter has begun flight testing at the Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant, Russian Helicopters announced on 13 October.
The helicopter completed its first hovering flight in September, clearing the way for the testing programme to commence.
The modernised Mi-28N is being designed to improve the combat capabilities of the Russian Army. The aircraft is equipped with a new guidance, navigation and flight control system, and new armour that protects against armour-piercing bullets and projectiles with a calibre up to 20mm.
The front cabin of the aircraft has been fitted with a second set of controls, and upgrades will allow commander and the pilot to receive more information about the environment and all helicopter systems in a more accessible format. The goal is to increase crew situational awareness, facilitate interaction and increase the speed of decision-making in complex combat situations.
A new radar over the rotor hub assembly will enhance capabilities in the use of precision weapons, including self-guided missiles; and the main rotor blades are made of composite materials, which allows the aircraft to complete a flight after being hit by a 20-30mm calibre shell.
The helicopter’s integrated avionics suite can search for, detect and identify ground and air targets, define their coordinates and provide target designation for ground and air command centres. The helicopter's weapons include guided and unguided missile suites, bombs, as well as a movable gun mount with 30mm gun.
Alexander Mikheev, CEO, Russian Helicopters, said: ‘The upgraded Mi-28N is a highly effective attack helicopter, which is able to perform a wide range of tasks, from aerial reconnaissance and target designation to destruction of diverse ground and air targets. Among its main advantages are not only agility and ability to operate around the clock, but also increased firepower. This helicopter marks a new achievement of the Russian helicopter industry.’
