AAR Airlift Group has purchased two AgustaWestland AW189 helicopters for Search and Rescue (SAR) operations in the Falkland Islands, as announced by AgustaWestland on 5 March.

The UK Ministry of Defence awarded a contract in January 2015 to AAR Airlift Group to provide SAR services in the Falkland Islands. The company will use a mixed fleet of Sikorsky S-61s and AW189s.

AgustaWestland will deliver the AW189s by the end of 2015 to support crew and personnel familiarisation. The helicopters will achieve operational readiness in spring 2016. A ten-year support and training service package is also included.

The AW189s will operate from the Mount Pleasant Airfield on the South Atlantic islands. British International Helicopters will provide flight operations support. They will perform missions in environmental conditions where their design, capabilities, extended range/endurance and safety standards are key for SAR mission success.

David Storch, CEO and chairman, AAR Corp, said: 'We are leveraging AAR Airlift Group’s experience in austere environments to expand into the offshore SAR market.

'Based on our expertise in civil and military aviation operations, AAR has developed an advanced commercial SAR programme that will be well served by the state-of-the-art AW189.'
