MD Helicopters is to deliver a custom-configured MD 530F helicopter to the Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) Aviation Unit, the company announced on 31 August.

This will be the first MD Helicopters aircraft to join the VBPD since the helicopter operations unit was established.

The unit provides aerial law enforcement, including air patrol, search and rescue, surveillance, as well as crime scene and damage assessment, in addition to providing assistance in dignitary transports and project lifesaver support as required.

The helicopter to be delivered to the VBPD will be a right-hand command aircraft with a Rolls-Royce 250-C30 turbine engine, extended landing gear, Fargo 21 gallon auxiliary fuel tank, and a wire-strike protection system. Its equipment for low-light operations will include high-contrast rotor blades, a FLIR Star SAFIRE 380 HDc EO/IR system, TrackBeam A800 searchlight and a NVISB interior.

The glass cockpit will include a Garmin 500H EFIS flight display, Garmin GTN650H touchscreen GPS panel, Garmin GMA 350H audio panel, Howell Instruments Engine Instruments Display, Technisonic TDFM 9300 and Garmin GTR 225 multi-band airborne radios, and Churchill ARS-600 airborne mapping system.

The aircraft will be delivered in the second quarter of 2018.
