Charleston County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) has taken delivery of a Bell 407GX helicopter previously deployed by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office in Florida.

The newest addition to the department’s air support unit will replace an older Bell helicopter model acquired through the 1033 military surplus programme.

The new Bell 407GX can accommodate seven occupants as opposed to the previous aircraft's four-person capacity, and features a single-engine, four-blade rotor.

The helicopter will be equipped with a new model of FLIR infrared imaging system and a microwave down link system that allows real-time video streaming to ground personnel. This technology can be utilised by either the pilots or by passengers operating a rear control panel.

The fit-out includes a Churchill navigation system that provides street overlays of the operatinal area. The landing skids are equipped with flotation devices in the event of a water-based emergency landing.
