Babcock awarded wind farm support contract
Babcock Mission Critical Services (MCS) Onshore will provide specialist helicopter support to the new Walney Extension offshore wind farm under a contract awarded by DONG Energy, the company announced on 9 January.
The windfarm is scheduled to be operational in 2018, with 87 turbines providing clean electricity to around half a million UK homes. It will be located in the Irish Sea, approximately 19km off the coast of Cumbria.
The five-year helicopter support contract, which begins in 2018, will see Babcock operate a new hoist-equipped H135 aircraft, as well as a back-up EC135 T3, to transport people and cargo to and from the windfarm. The aircraft will be custom-configured by Babcock to meet DONG’s specifications. Babcock pilots and hoist operators will lower passengers and equipment onto the turbines to execute repair and maintenance works.
DONG Energy is awaiting a determination on a planning application for development of an aircraft hangar within Walney Airfield. The scheme will also require approval by the Civil Aviation Authority.
