The ninth Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) Landing Craft (LLC) to be constructed for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) by Navantia was launched on 24 November, with the company on track to deliver all twelve fast landing craft by the summer of 2015.

Navantia was awarded the contract to build the 12 LLC in September 2011. The Canberra Class LHDs – HMAS Canberra and HMAS Adelaide - will each carry six LLCs to embark, transport and deploy troops, equipment and aviation units during military and humanitarian missions.

The Canberra Class LHDs are also being constructed by Navantia in cooperation with BAE Systems Australia, and will enter service between 2014 and 2016.

Each LLC has a length of 23.30m, flotation length of 21.27m, width of 6.40m and depth of 2.80m. Powered by two 809 kW diesel engines and two waterjet propellers, they can travel at a speed of more than 20 knots carrying an Abrams vehicle, several army vehicles, fusiliers’ company or 20ft container truck.
