Airbus Helicopters has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the government of Romania that will see the company extend its presence in Romania and further develop production capabilities for the Super Puma MK1 helicopter at Brasov Aerospace Technological Park.

Over 300 IAR330 Puma and IAR316 Alouette helicopters have been produced for the Romanian armed forces and export market since the 1970s under partnership between Airbus Helicopters and the Romanian government.

Eurocopter Romania, a joint-venture with the state-owned company Industria Aeronautică Română, now IAR SA Brasov, was established in Brasov in 2002, where major inspections and repairs of Puma and Super Puma helicopters are conducted; as well as work on maintenance export contracts. Work on the UK’s Puma Life Extension Programme is also conducted from the Brasov facility.

Under this MoU, Airbus Helicopters plans to build on Eurocopter Romania’s success in developing cost-effective solutions to maintain and retrofit the Puma helicopter as it evaluates development options for its family of twin-engine medium helicopters.

Airbus Helicopters aircraft perform missions for several Romanian State institutions, including the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Interior, and the Intelligence Service Agency (SRI).
