UDT 2018: Threat commonality dominates opening discussions
The twin needs for naval services to meet the threats posed by an emergent Russia dominated the opening remarks at the UDT conference and exhibition in Glasgow.
Calls were made by serving UK officers to refocus in training its military personnel into a mindset more familiar with the peer-conflict threat of the Cold War, after decades of counter-insurgency operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
This need was brought into stark clarity in 2014 following the Russian annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and the intervention into eastern Ukraine.
