USCG considers the bright side of icebreaker hurdles
Despite a potential funding roadblock, the US Coast Guard's (USCG) new Commandant ADM Karl Schultz said he is 'guardedly optimistic' that lawmakers will shore up Heavy Polar Icebreakers (HPIB) funds for next year, whilst downplaying criticism over the service's acquisition practices.
During a 1 August Center for Strategic and International Studies event, Schultz discussed USCG plans to build a fleet of vessels capable of navigating the Arctic's icy waters, as well as a recent Government Accountability Office assertion that the USCG's acquisition strategy is 'short-sighted'.
