US Navy pursuing shipyard upgrades
The US Navy, which recently released a $21 billion, 20-year plan to modernise its four public shipyards, is moving ahead with making the document a reality, according to US Navy secretary Richard Spencer.
Implementation is ‘underway,’ Spencer testified on 12 December at a joint hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee’s seapower and readiness panels. ‘This is a key focus. We are allocating dollars.’
Responding to questioning from Sen Mazie Hirono, the seapower subcommittee’s ranking member, Spencer said that the navy is looking at doing one of the first projects at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in her home state.
