Sonardyne International’s Sentinel underwater intruder detection sonar system has been installed at the site of a new critical national infrastructure (CNI) facility in the Middle East, the company announced on 21 August.

Multiple in-water sonars and control room equipment has been installed to provide uninterrupted situational awareness over a large waterfront to monitor unauthorised access from the sea.

The sonars have been placed on permanent seabed mounts in key locations across the shoreline.

Sentinel is designed to detect, track and classify divers and small underwater vehicles approaching a protected asset, alerting security personnel to the potential threat. The system provides a 360 degree angle of coverage, and provides long range warning of incoming targets allowing for security personnel to intercept the threat.

In the case of divers being detected, the sonar can also determine the type of diving equipment the divers are wearing; open or closed circuit.
