Philippines orders ten MRRVs from JMU
The Philippines have ordered ten 40m Multi-Role Response Vessels (MRRVs) for the Philippine Coast Guard in a project awarded to Japan Marine United (JMU).
The vessels are being acquired as part of the Maritime Safety Capability Improvement project, and will be implemented via a tied loan extended by the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
The MRRVs will be used by the coast guard as primary rescue vessels during maritime incidents such as oil spills, as well as for sea patrol and to curb illegal fishing; as a rapid response platform during relief operations; and for transporting personnel and logistical support.
The MRRVs will be deployed to various coast guard districts across the country, including Manila, La Union, and Puerto Prinsesa.
Jun Abaya, secretary, Department of Transportation and Communications, said: 'This project is part of government’s programme to equip our forces with necessary assets to protect the national marine interest. These ten new vessels will help the coast guard in its functions of maritime law enforcement, search-and-rescue operations, and upholding maritime security within Philippines seas.'
