Opinion: UK leans toward maritime security focus

At the Royal United Service Institute (RUSI) Seapower conference in May, Gavin Williamson, the secretary of state for defence and Adm Phillip Jones, First Sea Lord, both gave keynote speeches setting out their vision of the role of Seapower in the 21st century and its relevance to Britain. 

The speeches were notable for both their global ambition, but also the way they returned to the risk of resurgent threats from Russia and how the UK could tackle them in an increasingly uncertain world.
