Naval chief calls for anti-piracy measures

Greater co-operation among West African countries is needed to combat the rising tide of piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, a leading Ghana Navy official has advocated.

Cdre Samuel Anim, principal general staff officer at the Ministry of Defence, Ghana Navy, told the OPV14 conference in Dublin that the foundations had already been laid after regional leaders signed protocols advancing co-operation at a recent meeting in Cameroon.

‘There is a need for Gulf of Guinea countries to work more closely together to protect their common interests,’ said Anim. ‘We share a common maritime area and face the same threats.’
