Metal toughness has deep-diving Riptide UUV in its element
BAE Systems has developed two new prototypes of its Riptide UUV using aluminium and titanium that allow the system to dive to far greater depths, as the company looks to develop the platform following the acquisition of key elements of US-based Riptide Autonomous Solutions in 2019.
There are currently three models in the range of differing sizes all of which can dive to 300m, detailed Paco Santana, manager of business development for BAE Systems FAST Labs.
In addition, a prototype platform made from aluminium capable of diving to 1,500m has been developed, along with a titanium variant using additive manufacturing
