Luerssen has formed a joint venture with Civmec called the Australian Maritime Shipbuilding and Export Group, the Australian Department of Defence announced on 26 May.

The joint venture will play a major role in Luerssen's programme to build a new fleet of Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV) for the Royal Australian Navy.

In November 2017, the Australian government selected Luerssen to supply 12 OPVs to the navy. The project is worth around $3.6 billion and construction of the first OPV will start in South Australia later in 2018.
