Japan launches second Li-ion-equipped submarine
Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) launched a second diesel-electric Soryu-class submarine powered by lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries at its Kobe shipyard on 6 November.
To be christened JS Toryu (SS 512), it will be delivered to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) in March 2021. The submarine was laid down in January 2017.
This boat is the twelfth submarine in the Soryu class, plus it is the sixth to be manufactured by KHI. Its price tag is listed as JPY69 billion ($635 million).
According to data released by KHI, the submarine displaces 2,950t, and measures 91m long, 9.1m wide and 10.3m
