Japan launches eighth and final BMD destroyer
Japan Marine United launched a new 8,200t escort warship at its Yokohama shipyard on 17 July – christened Haguro and bearing the pennant number 180 – the second destroyer in the two-vessel Maya class (formerly known as the 27DDG).
This new destroyer for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) is similar in concept to the Atago class, but it is improved and more capable.
JS Haguro possesses the Aegis Baseline J7 combat system, which is the equivalent of the American Baseline 9C2/BMD 5.1 configuration. It utilises the AN/SPY-1D(V) phased-array radar and AN/SPQ-9B surface search/fire control radar.
