Japan to continue counter-piracy efforts
The Japanese government has identified piracy as a major area of ongoing concern in its annual defence White Paper issued on 5 August, and has outlined plans to continue the active promotion of security cooperation between nations in its attempt to counter the threat.
Set against the context of the continuing incidence of piracy off the coast of Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden, the white paper maintains that piracy remains a threat to the international community, particularly for island nations such as Japan, which depends on maritime transportation to import the majority of its food and resources.
