Insight: South American frigate programmes develop

With a number of shipbuilding programmes in South America get underway industry is readying itself to compete for these lucrative opportunities, as countries look to replace existing platforms or enhance capabilities.

One such programme will see Peru procure new multipurpose frigates, with shipbuilding companies submitting bids for the competition after an RfI closed at the end of November.

A new RfP phase is expected in 2019 and it is likely that the requirements from the Peruvian Navy will be lowered. The navy wants new light multipurpose frigate to replace its existing ageing pair of Almirante Aguirre-class (former Lupo-class) frigates
