INS Tarmugli enters service
The Indian Navy has commissioned its new Car Nicobar-class high-speed offshore patrol vessel, the INS Tarmugli, at the naval dockyard Visakhapatnam, it announced on 23 May.
INS Tarmugli will be based at Visakhapatnam and will be deployed for coastal surveillance and patrol operations along India's East Coast. It was built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), which also built and is building other vessels in the Car Nicobar class.
The vessel's entry into service is a success for India's 'Make in India' programme and efforts for indigenous warship design and construction.
The vessel can operate in high speeds in shallow waters and is fitted with MTU engines and water jet propulsion.
Armament includes a 30mm CRN 91 gun by Ordnance Factory Medak, a stabilised optronic pedestal day-night fire control system from Bharat Electronics Limited, two 12.7mm heavy machine guns and several medium machine guns, along with the 9K38 Igla man-portable infrared homing surface-to-air missile.
