Indonesia orders MCMVs and inducts hospital ship
Jakarta has ordered two new mine countermeasures vessels (MCMV), while the Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) also commissioned a second hospital ship, KRI Semarang, on 21 January.
The MCMV design-and-build contract, for which $204 million was allocated in MoD funding, was signed with German shipbuilder Abeking & Rasmussen.
The ships measure 62m long and they are apparently based on the Frankenthal class operated by the German Navy since the 1990s. Abeking & Rasmussen’s vessels use a non-magnetic steel hull.
The TNI-AL has two Dutch-built Pulau Rengat-class MCMVs that entered service in March 1988, and these are approaching replacement date. Indonesia
