IMDEX Asia: Is As-Pac ready for a sub accident?
Asia-Pacific is experiencing a surge in both submarine acquisitions and an interest by navies in gaining such a capability for the first time. Examples of the former include Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan and Thailand, while others such as Myanmar and the Philippines are eyeing the possibility. However, few may have properly considered a submarine rescue capacity.
Given the possibility of a repeat of the disaster in 2000 that killed all 118 aboard the Russian submarine Kursk, questions should be raised about the ability of some Asia-Pacific navies to handle a similar underwater accident.
