Raytheon bags AN/AQS-22 sonar contract
Raytheon has been awarded a $33 million contract to produce, deliver, integrate, and test AN/AQS-22 Airborne Low Frequency Sonar (ALFS) systems to the US Navy, it announced on 2 September.
The contract also includes an option to order additional systems for the US and foreign military sales. With this option exercised, the contract's cumulative value could exceed $98 million.
ALFS is a dipping sonar system with multi-frequency operation for submarine detection, tracking, localisation, classification, acoustic interception, underwater communication and environmental data collection capabilities.
The system is the primary undersea warfare sensor for the MH-60R naval multi-mission helicopter and is integrated with the Mk 54 lightweight torpedo, enabling full detect-to-engage anti-submarine warfare mission capabilities.
Kevin Peppe, vice president of integrated defense systems' seapower capability systems, Raytheon, said: 'Access and safe passage on the world's oceans are critical to our global interests, economy and security. ALFS' proven capabilities make it the US Navy's airborne anti-submarine warfare sensor of choice, able to effectively sense and detect the otherwise unseen threat of enemy submarines.'
