US Airways reports March 2009 and 1Q09 traffic for Express subsidiaries
US Airways has reported March 2009 and first quarter 2009 (1Q09) traffic figures for its two wholly-owned subsidiaries which operate under the brand – Piedmont Airlines and PSA Airlines.
In March, the carriers' traffic in revenue passenger miles (RPMs) was 175,581,000, a drop of 6.1% compared with 186,926,000 in March 2008. Capacity in available seat miles (ASMs) also fell year-on-year, this time by 2.1% to 263,976,000 to 269,696,000. The resulting load factor was 66.5%, a decreaase of 2.8 percentage points (pp) from March 2008's 69.3%. The total passengers carried by the pair in March 2009 was 652,046, down from 662,126 last March – a 1.5% drop.
In the first quarter of 2009, Piedmont and PSA recorded 470,367,000 RPMs, down 7.3% from 507,340,000 in 1Q08. ASMs for the airlines in 1Q09 were 761,422,000, 2.9% below 1Q08's figure of 783,918,000. The quarterly load factor dropped to 61.8%, 2.9 pp less than the 64.7% in the same period last year. Passengers carried in 1Q09 numbered 1,753,932, which was a 3.2% decrease on the 1Q08 total of 1,811,784.
Piedmont Airlines operates a fleet of Bombardier Dash 8-100/300 aircraft for US Airways Express, while PSA Airlines flies Bombardier CRJ200s and CRJ700s.
