Tiger Airways has begun its twice daily flights between Penang and Singapore. The opening of the route comes as the airline welccomed aboard its nine millionth passenger.

Rosalynn Tay, managing director Tiger Airways Singapore commented, “Our Airbus A320 has a maximum capacity of 180 passengers and we are delighted to have a close to a sell-out crowd on the inaugural flight to Penang today. This fabulous response to the new service demonstrates that there is a lot of pent up demand for true low-fare flights.”

The airline say the Penang route is a further demonstration of the pace of liberalisation in the region. “Prior to February 2008 there were no low-fare airlines flying between Singapore and Malaysia," noted Tay. "On 1 February 2008 we commenced flying with a daily return flight between KL and Singapore. By the start of August, Tiger Airways will have gone from 14 flights a week to 114 flights a week between Singapore and Malaysia [within 18 months].”
