Southwest Airlines reports traffic for December 2008 and full calendar year

Southwest Airlines reports that it flew 5.8 billion revenue passenger miles (RPMs) in December 2008, a 1.1% increase from the 5.7 billion RPMs flown in December 2007. Available seat miles (ASMs) decreased 1.0% to 8.3 billion from the December 2007 level of 8.4 billion. The load factor for the month was 69.7%, compared to 68.2% for the same period last year.

For the whole of 2008, Southwest flew 73.5 billion RPMs, up 1.6% on the 72.3 billion RPMs flown in 2007.  ASMs increased 3.6% to 103.3 billion from the 2007 level of 99.6 billion.  The load factor for the calendar year was 71.2%, compared with 72.6% for 2007.
