Southwest Airlines has reported its traffic figures for May 2009, which show that the airline's control over its capacity has resuled in almost the same load factor as in May 2008.
The carrier flew 6,434,369,000 revenue passenger miles (RPMs) in May 2009, a 3.6% decrease from the 6,672,655,000 RPMs flown in May 2008. Available seat miles (ASMs) decreased by 3.2% to 8,624,950,000 from the May 2008 level of 8,914,187,000.
This resulted in a load factor for the month of 74.6%, a slight decrease compared to the 74.9% achieved for the same period last year. The total revenue passengers carried was 7,470,271, an 8.3% decrease from May 2008's figure of 8,143,173.
The company estimates the passenger revenue per ASM to have decreased in the nine percent range compared to May 2008.
