Saudi Arabian Airlines has selected Inmarsat Swift satellite communications from Rockwell Collins as part of a package of avionics for 50 new Airbus A320-family aircraft to be delivered between next year and 2013.

The airline has specified the US manufacturer’s SAT-2100B terminal. This comprises the SRT-2100B satellite receiver/transmitter (housing the radio-frequency unit, satellite data unit and high-power amplifier), the HST-2110B Swift 64/SwiftBroadband unit, and HCM-2100, containing the subscriber identity module (SIM) cards that allow the HST to log into the SwiftBroadband network.

Applications of the equipment will include support for the onboard cellphone service that Saudi Arabian has contracted to receive from AeroMobile.

Other equipment in the Rockwell Collins package includes the MultiScan advanced weather, GLU-925 Global Landing System multi-mode receiver, and a range of navigation and radio communications equipment.
