HAL is major beneficiary of latest Indian procurement approvals
India has approved millions of dollars in new military purchases, most of which will go to public sector companies.
ATR and Air Nostrum have signed a contract for the airline to purchase of 10 ATR 72-600s, plus take options for 10 additional aircraft.
Though ATRs have flown in Air Nostrum colours, these were on a wet-lease basis, whereas the airline itself operated Bombardier Q Series turboprops. This, therefore, is one of the rare occasions where a customer has switched turboprop supplier in recent years.
The new aircraft will have the new cabin interior features of the ATR 600s, with improved lightweight, enhanced comfort seats and enlarged overhead bins. The delivery of these 70-seat configured aircraft will start in 2011.
Carlos Bertomeu, chief executive officer of Air Nostrum, remarked, “Thanks to the ATR 72-600's low operating costs, we will be able to maintain our leading position in the Spanish regional market. Our new fleet of ATRs will also allow us to further improve our cost structure and strengthen our business case while offering the best value to our customers.”
