March 2009 traffic for Southwest Airlines released

Southwest Airlines has reported traffic figures for March 2009 which it describes as "essentially flat" compared with March 2008.

The company flew 6,651,832,000 revenue passenger miles (RPMs) in March 2009, just 0.4% down on 6,679,424,000 in March 2008. Available seat miles (ASMs) decreased by 1.5% to 8,607,741,000 from the March 2008 level of 8,736,967,000.

The load factor for the month was 77.3%, up 0.8 percentage points compared with 76.5% for the same period last year. For March 2009, the company estimates passenger revenue per ASM decreased in the 10 to 11 percent range as compared to March 2008. Revenue passengers carried numbered 7,680,666 down 5.2% on March 2008's figure of 8,097,833.
