Frontier reports March traffic for mainline and Lynx
Frontier Airlines Holdings has announced preliminary traffic results for March 2009 for its mainline operation and that of its wholly-owned subsidiary, Lynx Aviation.
Mainline Frontier Airlines results for March 2009 showed revenue passenger miles (RPMs) decreasing by 24.0% to 716,094,000 from 942,369,000 and capacity measured in available seat miles (ASMs) down 19.7% to 897,642,000 from 1,117,237,000 in the same period last year. This resulted in a load factor of 79.8%, a decrease of 4.6 percentage points (pp) over March 2008's 84.4%. The airline carried 797,999 passengers in March this year, a 16.3% decrease from 953,078 in the same period last year.
Passenger yield for the month was 10.49 cents, down 1.32 cents (or 11.2) from March 2008. Passenger unit revenue (passenger revenue per ASM) decreased by 16.0% to 8.37 cents.
For the first quarter (1Q09), RPMs fell by 20.3% to 1,945,776,000 from 2,440,783,000 in 1Q08. ASMs for the respective quarters were cut by 16.2% to 2,609,597,000 from 3,114,427,000. The resultant load factor in 1Q09 was 74.6%, 3.8 pp down on last year's first quarter figure of 78.4%. Revenue passengers carried in 1Q09 totalled 2,159,374, a decline of 12.8% against the 2,476,778 carried in 1Q08.
The passenger yield for 1Q09 was 10.27 cents which against last year's figure was a drop of 4.6%. Passenger unit revenue was 7.65 cents, a fall of 9.4 % on the 8.44 cents achieved in 1Q08.
At Lynx Aviation, March 2009 figures showed RPMs decreased by 26.7% to 28,098,000 from 38,332,000 in March 2008 and capacity was down 11.6% to 47,795,000 from 54,082,000. This resulted in a load factor for March 2009 of 58.8%, a decrease of 12.1 pp over March 2008's 70.9%. Lynx carried 81,273 passengers in the month, a 6.1% decrease from the 86,594 carried in March 2008.
Passenger yield for March 2009 was 21.47 cents, up 10.8% from 19.38 cents in the same month last year. Passenger unit revenue decreased by 8.2% to 12.62 cents from 13.74 cents.
Over 1Q09, Lynx Aviation's RPMs reached 73,461,000, and 18.0% decrease compared with 89,555,000 RPMs in 1Q08. ASMs fell by 7.7% to 136,745,000 from 148,225,000 in the respective period last year. The load factor for the quarter was 53.7%, a fall of 6.7 pp from last year's equivalent of 60.4%. Overall in 1Q09, revenue passengers carried numbered 213,659, a drop of 5.5% year-on-year from 202,4521 in 1Q08.
Passenger yield in 1Q09 was 21.70 cents, against a figure of 18.23 cents in the same quarter last year, which was a 19.0% decrease. The passenger unit revenue figue stood at 11.66 cents in 1Q09, 5.9% up on 1Q08's 11.02 cents.
