Southampton will have new scheduled air links to both Zurich and Geneva six days a week. The announcement has been made today by Channel Islands airline Blue Islands who are introducing these new routes to Europe’s key financial centres from 26th October.

Derek Coates, Chairman of BlueIslands, said: ‘with our new year round schedule we are offering daily flights (Sunday to Friday) departing from Southampton for Geneva in the morning and Southampton to Zurich in the afternoon. These new flights connect to Switzerland through Jersey, with passengers staying on board during the stop off.

Mr Coates added: ‘we recognised the potential for operating these air links, as nearly 360,000 passengers flew to Zurich and Geneva from the Southampton area in 2007 using an airport other than Southampton; 50% of these were business travellers. This clearly demonstrates a demand for these destinations.’

The three new routes (Zurich/Geneva/Jersey) starting next month will be serviced by a 31-seat Southampton based Dornier 328, one of the fastest and most modern of fuel efficient turboprop aircraft. For business class comfort, it is the aircraft of choice for senior executives and is ideal for niche routes that would not justify mass market larger aircraft.

Paul Sabin, Managing Director of BlueIslands, said: ‘Along with our competitive fares and fully changeable tickets, BlueIslands offers the passenger the added benefit of a dedicated Southampton check-in desk and a Fast Track channel through security. Customers also appreciate that we offer free ticket and name changes on all bookings.’

For the leisure traveller, both Zurich and Geneva have easy and convenient transfer links to most of the Swiss and French ski resorts, many of them just over an hour’s drive from either airport.

Mr Coates pointed out: ‘Southampton is the ideal gateway airport for many of the cities of Southern England and is within easy reach by train or car of Swindon, Basingstoke, Reading and the M3 corridor.
