SAS celebrates its 25th year with a hat-trick of new contracts

22 September 2009 - 18:30 by the Shephard News Team

UK based operator and support organisation Specialist Aviation Services has announced three new contracts at Helitech.

Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance has selected SAS subsidiary, Medical Aviation Services, to provide a turnkey support package under a new ten year contract. Their existing Explorer G-LNAA which has been a regular visitor at Helitech over the past eight years will be replaced by a brand new factory built Explorer, when the current contract expires next year.

SAS has also announced its new multi-year lighthouse maintenance contract with Trinity House. The company will put a specially equipped MD Explorer into service at the end of next year to transport technicians & equipment in support of the remote lighthouses around the English and Welsh coasts.

SAS bid the contract against the EC135 and the MD Explorer was selected on account of its extra load-lifting capability and the added safety of its NOTAR anti-torque system. The Explorer will replace the Bo 105’s used for over 30 years.

And following on from the launch of the Herts Air Ambulance last year, MAS is now pleased to announce that it has also been selected by Essex and Herts Air Ambulance Trust for a two MD Explorer operation which will serve both Hertfordshire and Essex from June 2010.

The current Explorer G-HAAT will continue to be based at North Weald, whilst the second Explorer will replace the existing Essex based EC135, with a possible base move from Boreham to the Trust’s headquarters at Earls Colne.

As Henk Schaeken, Group Managing Director explains: “These new contracts are part of a step growth in our business which will see a 15% increase from next year. This is great news for us and we’re very pleased to be able to buck the trend as we celebrate our 25th year in business here at Helitech”
