Royal Netherlands Air Force Helicopters train for Afghanistan
Helicopters from the Royal Netherlands Air Force and a company from 11 Air Mobile Brigade have been training for deployment to Afghanistan.
Exercise Hawkeye Challenge began on December 8 and finishes today at military bases in North Brabant, Gelderland and at a glider field in Zeeland. The purpose of the exercise is to promote a safe and efficient cooperation between the units of the Army and Air Force helicopters.
Four Apache attack helicopters, two Chinooks and two Cougar transport helicopters, along with a pair of German Bölkow helicopters are participating.
The helicopters are practicing a range of missions. The Apaches are being used for reconnaissance, escort of transport helicopters and ground convoys. The transport helicopters are carrying out medical evacuations and transporting personnel and equipment.
The ground troops are working in cooperation with the helicopter units, securing enemy territory. Also involved are specialists of the Explosive Ordnance Defence Command.
