Night Flight Concepts Completes NVG Initial Qualification Training for Broward SO Aviation Unit

04 February 2010 - 0:00 by the Shephard News Team

In December, the Broward County (Florida) Sheriff's Office Aviation Unit completed the Turn Green, Turn Key program offered by Night Flight Concepts (NFC).

Night Flight Concepts is the industry's premier provider of night vision goggles, training and maintenance.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) comprehensive NVG training package took place on-site at the departments' flight operation facility. The training incorporated use of their Eurocopter EC 130 & EC 135 aircraft. Included in NFC's training package were ground and flight training for the pilots, tactical flight officers (TFO), and unit instructor pilots. The ground training portion included use of the NFC exclusive Virtual Terrain Board (VTB), supplied by Night Readiness, LLC of Arizona. "The VTB is truly a benefit to the training program because by the time you get to the aircraft portion of the training, you know what to expect, visually", commented BCSO pilot Deputy Brian Miller.

Flight training was conducted by Randy Rowles, chief flight instructor for NFC. Training included single and multi-engine maneuvers, autorotations, and operational area training while using NVG's. "We spent several hours training in the Florida Everglades," commented Rowles. "BCSO operates in an area that compliments the use of NVG's. The Everglades provide many challenges to the pilots, and we spent many hours of scenario-based training on situations they may encounter."

Additionally, NFC provided the only FAA TSO-C164-approved Night Vision Aviation Goggles (NVAG); an extended night vision goggle (NVG) inspection service agreement to maintain the NVG's continued air-worthiness; and an REB Technologies EC-130 and EC-135 STC NVG lighting kit and modification.
