AKV delivery 40 engine cycle counting systems to Era Helicopters

06 October 2008 - 8:50 by the Shephard News Team

ERA understands the significance of recording accurate engine cycles and looked to AKV to provide these critical systems. Operating a fleet of forty AS350's requires not only a system that is dependable and accurate but also affordable.

AKV Engine Cycle Counters are in their fifth year of operating in environments from Antarctica to South Africa and can always be depended on to relieve the pilot of the important task of tracking engine cycles. Utilizing the engine manufacturers less conservative procedure, possible only by means of a computer as with the AKV system, guarantees engine cycle savings on any turbine engine when compared to the manual pilot procedure.

Current installation approvals include all AS350 models powered with Arriel or LTS101 engines. The newest member to the available list of cycle counters from AKV includes the Dual Engine Cycle Counter for all BK117A through C2's (EC145). Upcoming additions to the Dual Cycle Counter STC will include the S76 and B222.

New STC's nearing completion are for the Honeywell T53 powered B204, B205, B210 and UH-1 Helicopters with an expected completion date by the end of the year. Operators of UH-1's operating under restricted category regulations are already enjoying the huge cycle savings from the AKV cycle counter by completing their own field installation approvals. This has provided excellent field operational results especially during the fire season this year.

This month, AKV expect to receive a new STC for a Dual Tachometer Indicator for the AS350BA, B1 and B2. This will provide a means to indicate Free Turbine (Np) along with Rotor (Nr) speeds when the engine gear box is installed with the Np tachometer generator. The new indicator is also designed as a direct replacement for the B2. Many operators of the Arriel 1B engine have installed the Np tachometer generator to conform to the latest cycle counting requirements for the Arriel 1 engine and in conjunction with the AKV Cycle Counter, indication of the NP speed to the pilot will further enhance overall safety.
