Lufthansa Technik has opened a new centre for aircraft maintenance and component services at the Italian airport of Milan Malpensa.

The services of Lufthansa Technik Milan (LTMIL) include component and planned maintenance services up to A-checks, aircraft-on-ground (AOG) support and troubleshooting. Initially, aircraft from the Airbus A320 and A330/A340 families as well as Boeing 737s will be maintained. LTMIL will extend its services to other aircraft types when the market demands.

"We are very grateful to Lufthansa Technik for opening a new maintenance centre in Malpensa. This decision strengthens the partnership with Lufthansa Group,” said Giuseppe Bonomi, chairman of Sea Milan Airports. “After Lufthansa Italia and Lufthansa Cargo, now, thanks to Lufthansa Technik Milan, Malpensa can rely on a great company, worldwide appreciated for its experience. All airlines operating in Malpensa will have the opportunity to choose the knowhow of Lufthansa Technik for the maintenance of their aircraft."

"The very good infrastructure at the Malpensa offers an excellent business environment for the new centre to serve Lufthansa Italia and other customers," remarked August Wilhelm Henningsen, chairman of the Executive Board of Lufthansa Technik at the ceremonial opening of LTMIL. "We strongly believe in the economic success of Lufthansa Technik Milan. Our planned investments are a clear sign of our serious and long-term commitment at Malpensa airport."

The basis for setting up LTMIL is Lufthansa Technik Component Services Milan (LTCSM), which has been operational since spring 2008 and is responsible for regional material support in Milan. It works according to EASA 145-standard. By extending the aircraft maintenance, Lufthansa Technik is now able to offer a significantly wider range of technical services at Malpensa. This is also reflected in the change of the name to "Lufthansa Technik Milan".

In the medium-term LTMIL plans to raise its number of employees from the current 30 to 160. Lufthansa Technik will invest about €8 million over the next five years in Milan. For the maintenance services LTMIL has rented a 6,400 sq m-hangar which offers space for up to four narrowbody or one widebody plus two narrowbody aircraft.
